Does fear hold you back?

Does fear hold you back?

Fear has two meanings. Forget everything and run or face everything and rise. – Zig Ziglar

I love this quote. It’s all down to how you choose to see something. You can decide to listen to your fears, or you can push through them and do it anyway.  The biggest growth happens when you choose to push through your fears and not let them stop you.

We’ve all been afraid

We’ve all been afraid and chosen not to do something because it scared you. I’ve been there too; I’ve also been on the other side and rose through it. You can’t always be in your comfort zone, you have to be scared sometimes. I’m sure we’ve all been through times, and can recall a moment you’ve been scared, but powered through anyway.

My Story of Overcoming Fear

The one that springs to mind for me is when I was 14. I choose to ignore my fear and go through with a major operation that had the potential to paralyze me, kill me, or make my back straighter.

My surgeon at the time told I’d most likely be in a wheel chair by the time I’m 30, if I didn’t go through with it. He also told me that the girl who he operated on before me died during the operation. I’d seen the video of the operation and even saw it on Children’s Hospital, which was a popular program back then. I was told things that could have made me run a mile in the opposite direction at such a young age. Imagine if I’d decided to let fear win.

I went through the operation, but had complications and I died several times, but I lived and I’m here at 33, still able to walk. I could have very easily ran away and choose not to go through with it.  It would have been something that a lot of people may have done, given the information that was given to me at the time.

What If’s

Imagine what would have happened if I let that fear hold me back. My life would have been very different. I may not even be here to tell my story. How different would your life be if you had of let fear hold you back every time you were scared?

I’ve been through things that I’ve let stand in way too, I know you have as well. There is always some point in someone’s life they’ve decided not to do something and generally, the underlying reason is they were scared.

Don’t let fear stand in your way. You don’t have let it hold you back. I was fed up waking up every day being scared; having a hundred scenarios running through my head that have a 99.9% chance of never happening. I decided that I did not want to be on my death-bed, or in my 80’s and have regrets. What if I’d have done that? Why didn’t I take that chance? I regret not doing that.  Do you want to have those questions running through your head when it’s too late?

I know you don’t. I know you can push fear to one side and do that thing you’ve always been too afraid to do. Ask yourself, will I regret not doing that when I’m 80? If the answer is yes, or I don’t know then do it. What do you have to lose?

Closing Thoughts

If I could choose to go through something that was essentially a life or death situation, then why did I run away from situations that weren’t? None of those situations ever had a life or death risk again, but I was scared so I ran away.

Do you let fear hold you back? Will you from now on go ahead and think of things a little differently when your scared,? or perhaps decide to do something that you previously wouldn’t because you no longer want to let fear hold you back? I know I will. Fear will not stand in my way any longer.

I fully believe that I didn’t die back when I was 14 because I was meant to do something bigger with my life. I was meant to help others and that is exactly what I am going to do.

Feel free to post your stories of fear below.  I hope that my story helped you, just a bit.

Thank you for reading
