You can learn a lot from the things you experience. The things I have experiences in my life have made me who I am and that’s the same for you too. I am proud to have gone through the things I have. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t have gone through these things. It was tough to say the least at times, but I am here and I am stronger because of those things.
Let’s go back a few years
I realised something a few days ago that’s taken me over 15 years to realise. When I was 15 I had a major operation on my spine. The complication during that operation caused them to have to use the defibrillator on me, twice. They said at the time that my body forgot how to react, belittling the fact that I actually died. I brushed this off as nothing at the time. It didn’t bother me because I had gone through several years of hell at school at that point and I didn’t care what happened to me. I know that sounds terrible now, but it was how I felt at the time. I haven’t actually told anybody that I felt that way, until now.
That act of my body nearly failing on me could and should have been a turning point in my life back then. I could have told people how I felt about myself and got the help I needed, but I never did. I felt broken and I was actually too embarrassed to tell anybody. If you know my story, it isn’t any wonder why I felt broken. I mean, teenage life is hard for anybody, but to go through what I did and come out the other side a stronger person for it took a lot of effort.
I survived though and I’m here to tell you why.
Why am I telling you this?
The reason for this story? I know now that it wasn’t my time, I was put on this earth for a reason, just like we all are. I was meant to change people’s lives, to help people and do something amazing. It’s these experiences in my life that have made me who I am and it’s no mistake that I’m having the experiences that I am now. What I learnt from that experience is that if I survived that, I can survive anything. I went through years of pain and come out of it the other side a better person for having that experience.
Take comfort in the fact that your experiences don’t last forever, they are temporary and they are shaping who you are and they will teach something that will help you in your future. I know it isn’t easy at the time to hear these things, but I wouldn’t change anything I have been through because I wouldn’t be here now if I did.
What can you learn from your experiences?
I have a task for you. I want you to sit and journal on these questions:
- Thinking about your past experiences through your life, what lessons did they teach you?
- How are you stronger now because of those experiences?
You see, it’s all about perception. If you look for the negatives in something, you’re going to find it and then, you’re missing the point of having that experience. Let me know how you get on, I’d love to know.
